The 5 AM test: can your best customer buy from you before you open?
Here's the audit we run before quoting any project, and you can run it tonight for free. At an hour when your business is closed, pull out your phone and try to give yourself money.
Search the way a stranger would — your trade, your town. Find yourself (if you can). Now try to book an appointment, order food for tomorrow, or request a quote. Count every dead end: the unanswered DM, the “call us” with nobody there, the form that goes nowhere, the hours listed on a page last updated in 2023.
Most owner-run businesses fail the test not because the owner doesn't care, but because every path to purchase routes through the owner's hands — and the owner is asleep, mid-tattoo, or elbow-deep in the dinner rush.
The businesses that pass have quietly installed infrastructure: online booking with real open slots, order-ahead that prints to the kitchen, a text-back system that answers the missed call in seconds. None of it is exotic. All of it works at 5 AM.
The gap matters because buying decisions don't wait for business hours. The bride booking a salon, the family choosing tonight's dinner in the car, the tourist picking a tattoo shop from a motel bed — they choose from whoever is bookable at the moment of intent.
Pass the test, and you win customers while you sleep. Fail it, and your competitor doesn't have to be better — just reachable.
