Four ways up,
and one of them closes
The tarmac gives up at Val Terrada. People arrive slightly annoyed and leave asking whether we would consider closing the road permanently.
By car
April to mid-December
Autostrada to Val Terrada, then 7 km of gravel and eleven bends from the last farm. Nine parking spaces at the door, first come. Somewhere around the fourth bend the phone signal goes and does not come back.
By transfer
16:00 daily · 11:00 Saturdays
From the church square in Val Terrada, free, 35 minutes, chains on the van from December. Tell us your arrival time when you book and the driver waits for your train.
In winter
mid-December to March
Above 1,500 m the road belongs to the snow. The transfer is not the convenient option then, it is the only one — and the house fills with people who like that fact.
On foot
Any month, 2 h 40 from the village
The north path leaves the square by the dairy and climbs 900 m. Tell the desk you are walking up: if you are not here by dark, somebody comes down with a torch.
The practical page
We answer the phone between seven and ten, every day the house is open. If it rings out, leave a message — we call back the same evening.

Said up front
None of these is buried in a terms page. If one of them is a problem, it is much better that it is a problem now than at 15:00 on a Friday at 1,847 m.
- Minimum stay
- Two nights. Three over New Year, and three across the August weeks.
- Children
- Over eight, yes — two rooms take a third bed. Under eight is a hard no: the terrace has a 40 cm rail over a long drop.
- Dogs
- One per booking, €25 a night, not in the dining room. There is a drying room for the muddy ones.
- Cancellation
- Free up to 14 days out. Inside that we hold one night, unless we can re-let the room — and we usually can.
- The Open Deck
- The desk calls it at 17:00. Indoors at the other room's rate, or that night is free. It is not a negotiation.
- Payment
- Nothing is charged when you request dates. The room is held 48 hours while we check the transfer.
- Arrival
- Check-in 15:00 to 20:00, out by 11:00. Dinner is 19:30 sharp and the kitchen does not hold it.
- Quiet
- After 22:00 the old wing carries sound like a drum. That is the whole of the rule.
Questions we
get weekly

Anything not answered here, ring us between seven and ten: +39 0471 555 0198.
Can I drive all the way up in winter?
Not usually. The last 7 km are unpaved and above 1,500 m we lose them to snow from roughly mid-December. There is one transfer a day from the church square in Val Terrada at 16:00, and a second at 11:00 on Saturdays. It is free, it takes 35 minutes, and we ask for your arrival time when you book so the driver waits.
Is dinner included in the room rate?
Breakfast is. Dinner is €78 per person for five courses at one sitting, 19:30, at the long table — or add half board at €95 per person per night, which covers dinner plus the packed lunch for the next day. There is no à la carte. There is also nowhere else to eat within 9 km, and we would rather say that plainly.
Is there Wi-Fi?
In the library and the office, yes, and it is fast. In the rooms, no — deliberately, and we will not pretend it is a technical limitation. Mobile signal exists in patches on the terrace. If you need to be reachable, tell us and we will take messages on the house line.
What happens to an Open Deck booking if the weather turns?
We move you indoors to whichever room is free and you pay that room's rate instead, or you cancel that night at no charge. The call is made at 17:00 by whoever is on the desk, and it is not a negotiation — a wet night on an open platform at 1,847 m is not a boutique experience, it is a rescue.
Children and dogs?
Children over eight, yes, and there are two rooms with a third bed. Under eight is a hard no: the terrace has a 40 cm rail over a long drop and we are not going to spend your holiday watching your child. One dog per booking, €25 a night, not in the dining room, and there is a drying room for the muddy ones.
How far ahead should I book?
Nine rooms and two full weeks blocked for maintenance means we sell out early. February and August usually close four to five months out; late September and early June are the ones people forget about and they are arguably the best. If your dates are gone, ask to go on the list — around one booking in seven moves.
