Some hotels promise you can do everything without leaving your room. We promise the opposite: up here there is gloriously little to do — and the mountain does most of it for you.

ALTA REFUGIO has stood on the Terrada saddle since 1954, when it was a shepherd’s hut with four bunks and a stove. Four generations later it is nine rooms, one long table, and a wood that creaks honestly.

The valley

Seven kilometres
of switchbacks.
Then nothing.

The tarmac gives up at Val Terrada. What follows is gravel, eleven bends and a cattle grid, and somewhere around the fourth bend the phone signal goes and does not come back. People arrive slightly annoyed. They leave asking whether we would consider closing the road permanently.

First light lands on the Zirmspitze roughly eleven minutes before it reaches the terrace. Every east-facing room gets it; the desk will wake you for it if you ask, and about a third of guests do.

Rates are per night with breakfast; half board adds €95 per person. Two-night minimum, three over New Year. One of the nine has no roof, and one of them is a four-minute walk downhill in the dark.

The old wing

Thirty-four stairs, pine boards floor to ceiling, one landing bathroom shared between the four. The cheapest beds in the house, and the ones guests write to us about.

The south terrace
Two rooms · one of them has no roof
South-facing, over the meadow, off the terrace with the 40 cm rail and no glass. One of the two is a bed on a timber platform under open sky, which is either the best idea this house ever had or a rescue waiting to happen.
