Do I need a website if I have Instagram?

Sometimes no. Instagram reach is rented and search traffic never lands there — here's the exact moment that stops being enough, and a two-minute test.

The question usually arrives when Instagram is working, not when it's failing. The fresh fades get saves, the DMs fill the chair, a story posted at noon sells out the Saturday slots. An owner running an account like that has every reason to ask why they should pay for a website that does, apparently, nothing.

So start with the honest answer: sometimes you don't need one. A brand-new shop living entirely on walk-ins and word of mouth, in a town where every customer already knows which street you're on — that business can run on a good grid and a taped-up sign for a while. If nobody is searching for you yet, there is nothing for a website to catch.

But understand what you're standing on. Instagram is rented ground. The algorithm decides how many of your own followers see each post, and that number is whatever the platform needs it to be this quarter. You can't export your followers. You can't call anyone when the login stops working. Accounts get hacked, flagged, and locked every day, and the appeal is a form that answers no one. Years of posts can vanish between a Tuesday and a Wednesday, and the platform owes you nothing — that's the deal you agreed to at signup.

The bigger problem is quieter: search traffic never lands on your grid. When someone types your trade and your town into Google — “barber Pflugerville,” “dentist Chandler,” “HVAC Waco” — the results are maps, directories, and websites. Instagram posts don't rank there. The person with a cracked tooth at 9 PM, the family that moved in last month, the landlord with a dead AC unit in July: the highest-intent customers you will ever not meet, handed to whoever owns a page Google can read.

That is the exact moment social stops being enough — when your growth has to come from strangers instead of regulars. Followers are people who already found you. Search is people looking for exactly what you do who haven't. Picture a Tuesday: a family new to town needs a haircut before picture day, searches the town's name plus “barber,” and gets three results — two competitors and a directory selling ads against both. Your four thousand followers don't vote in that election. Only pages do.

There's a two-minute test. Open an incognito window, so Google isn't flattering you with your own history, and search your trade plus your town. If you show up, good — social is carrying you fine as a second act. If the first page is competitors and directories, then everyone searching — which is everyone who doesn't already follow you — is finding someone else first, quietly, every day.

The fix is not quitting Instagram. Keep posting; it's the best free shop window a visual trade ever had. The fix is giving all that rented ground somewhere owned to point: one fast page on your own domain, with your photos, your hours, your prices, and one obvious way to book. Instagram warms people up. The site is where search finds you and where money changes hands — and no algorithm change, ban wave, or hacked login can take it down.

Instagram is the crowd on the sidewalk. A website is the deed to the building. Work the crowd all you want — just make sure the ground under your business is yours.
